SUMMER PRELUDE 2026
June 22 - 25, Hydra Island Greece
ANNU YADAV
Multimedia Artist Returns to Hydra
Annu Yadav (b. Rajasthan, India) is a New York based multimedia artist. Her practice explores interruption as it emerges across body, land, and culture. Her work moves through the spaces between polarities, where things do not fully resolve, where contradiction lives: gender and human division, west and east, tenderness beside violence. Meaning, for Yadav, begins at these unsettled edges, and the work orients itself toward them in the hope that presence itself becomes a path through. Yadav draws on ritual, vernacular mythologies, and dreamlike motifs to examine how suppression, desire, and violence leave marks on both flesh and territory.
INTERRUPTION
Hydra Site Specific Solo Show (October 2025)
Interruption was presented in Hydra as a site-specific solo exhibition at ArtCinema Hydra in October 2025, examining how division enters bodies, landscapes, and ideology. The work deepened through research into historical uses of starvation as a weapon, sharpened by the ongoing violence in Gaza. Flour, a domestic staple, became central to the installation, suspended as a body without organs within a 200 year old ruin, while surrounding paintings functioned as witnesses rather than illustrations. In these works, topography becomes anatomy, wounds become landscapes.
ARTCINEMA CREATIVE COLLABORATION
"The site for the exhibit wasn't just a space, it was a house with memory. A 200 year old house, was a participant, an active participant that entered the work and shaped it in ways no conventional space could have produced. The space did not host the installation. It became part of it. From the moment I shared the idea through to its final execution, Amanda and the ArtCinema team were not only supportive but genuinely enriching, bringing the kind of creative partnership that is rare and that deepened the work considerably. This flavour of engagement, from the team to the patrons who gathered around the program, made the experience as generative as it was significant."

SINCE HYDRA
Yadav's subsequent body of work, Interior Sedimentation, presented at Ant Project, Mexico City, approached the body as a site where time does not pass but accumulates. In 2026, her work was included in Frieze Art Week and Focus Art Fair, New York.
HYDRA 2026
This summer Yadav returns to Hydra as part of two events during ArtCinema Hydra's June prelude programme. At Rob Pruitt's Flea Market, she will bring objects and works that have enriched her creative life and practice, making them available to the Hydra community.
She will also participate in the drawing salon led by Stephen Appleby-Barr. Selected works will also be on view in Hydra during her visit.
AN OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING SALON
Season On Hydra
Annu will be joining Stephen in an "observational drawing salon" - a space designed to welcome participants of all levels of drawing experience. The salon focuses on simple observational exercises, fostering a de-programmed creative environment: a relaxed hang-out that lowers pressure and expectations. At the same time, it honours Hydra's living culture, celebrating both the island's resident artists and its visiting creatives.
The format is simple: participants will meet for an observational exercise and then spend time looking at one another's results. At the close of each session, drawings are laid out for everyone to see. As Stephen notes, "a lot of people are only willing to show 10%," and in that is "something both vulnerable and exciting".
In Stephen's words, the salon would be about "making bad coffee and drawing together and laughing about how none of us are as good at drawing as we want to be."
The salon proposes community over perfection.
If you would like to acquire one of Annu's works or commission a new piece, you can buy directly from te artist or both can be structured as a tax-deductible donation in support of ArtCinema's non-profit initiatives.
