HYDRA & SOPHIA: ECHOES OF THE DOLPHIN

Exploring how Sophia Loren and Boy on a Dolphin brought Hydra to international cinema

Hydra & Sophia: Echoes of the Dolphin marks ArtCinema’s first official film production.

In 1956, Italian icon Sophia Loren arrived on the island to star in Boy on a Dolphin, marking a pivotal moment that forever linked Hydra to her international legacy.

Our 30-minute documentary explores how that encounter between Greece, Italy, and Hollywood brought Hydra’s beauty and culture to a global audience, shaping its cinematic mythology.

In 2025, we interviewed Hydriots who remembered that era first-hand and generously shared their stories.

Blending personal stories, rare archival material, and performances by Hydra residents, the film is deeply shaped by the community itself.

Filmed entirely on Hydra and directed by acclaimed Greek filmmaker Antonis Sotiropoulos, written and produced by Georgia Andreou, and conceived and produced by ArtCinema founder Amanda Palmer.

FILM SCREENINGS

From its world premiere at Mandraki Beach to its return to Gardenia Open-Air Cinema

Mandraki Beach | 4 October 2025

The world premiere of Hydra & Sophia: Echoes of the Dolphin formed a centrepiece of ArtCinema Hydra’s 2025 Boy on a Dolphin tribute at Mandraki Beach.

Special guests included acclaimed fashion designer Vassilis Zoulias and actress and model Dorotea Mercuri, who reflected on Sophia Loren’s enduring influence on fashion, cinema and popular culture.

The programme also featured music by the Hydra Music Club and Panagiotis and Giannis Gavalas, alongside performances by Hydra Dance Days celebrating local talent and the legacy of Ti Einai Afto Pou To Lene Agapi (What Is This Thing Called Love?), composed by Takis Morakis for the original film.

Presented under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and the Italian Embassy in Athens, the screening was accompanied by talks from director Antonis Sotiropoulos, writer/producer Georgia Andreou, and ArtCinema founder and producer Amanda Palmer.

Gardenia Open-Air Cinema | 24 June 2026

Just days before Hydra’s Miaoulia celebrations, ArtCinema returned Hydra & Sophia: Echoes of the Dolphin to the Gardenia Open-Air Cinema for a special community screening. Presented in the place that inspired its story, the film offered audiences a shared celebration of Hydra’s cinematic heritage, enduring resilience and living cultural memory.

FUTURE PLANS

Expanding the story into a feature-length documentary

Newly discovered stories, images and archival material are now shaping a feature-length continuation of the project, planned for 2027 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the international release of Boy on a Dolphin.
