AM SHANLEY
AM Shanley is an Irish singer-songwriter, composer, musician and producer based in Paris. Blending lo-fi pop, moody Americana and jangly indie rock, Shanley’s idiosyncratic songwriting, emotive vocal and genre-defying analogue recording approach have earned him comparisons to luminaries like Lou Reed, Sparklehorse and Elliott Smith.
His latest record, the NI Music Prize-nominated mini-album American Vanilla, marks the return of an artist unburdened by the twenty-first century nor influenced by its fleeting trends. Produced and recorded to tape by Julie McLarnon (The Vaselines, Lankum, Jeffrey Lewis) Shanley’s singular songs of addiction, love and death merge the sonic universes of 70s pedal steel-laced alt-country of 70s Neil Young and Gram Parsons, to the nonchalant 90s lo-fi indie rock bands like Pavement and The Strokes. The record features longtime friends and collaborators Michael Mormecha, Ronnie McGreevy (Mojo Fury), Graham Bingham, Damien McKeown (Owlcrusher), Katie McHugh (Reillys) and Zach Trouten (TRU).
As a solo artist, Shanley has performed extensively in the US, Europe and the UK, sharing stages with artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Sam Fender, Hozier, The Divine Comedy and Foy Vance. His work has been featured on TV and film soundtracks including Extraordinary (Hulu/Disney+), Hart of Dixie (The CW) and Cup Cake (BBC).
“The most hidden of hidden gems Ireland has maybe ever produced…the heir to Sparklehorse and Elliott Smith’s maudlin crown” - BBC Introducing.
“One of the most compelling and deftly original songwriters in Ireland” - The Thin Air
“Burnished, lo-fi jangle-rock has never felt quite so naturally vital as it does in the hands of AM Shanley” - JanglePopHub
