LA COCINA

Greek premiere screening of the internationally acclaimed feature film La Cocina

On the evening of Friday, 4 October, ahead of our public programme launching the following day, ArtCinema invited guests and patrons for a special Surprise Opening Film.

The evening revealed an exclusive Greek premiere of La Cocina, the internationally acclaimed feature film directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios. Dark, emotional, dramatic, philosophical and deeply politically aware, the film stars Raúl Briones, who joined ArtCinema in Hydra for the opening night and took part in a live Q&A following the screening.

The evening also celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Hydra Cinema Club, recognising its enduring contribution to the island’s cultural life and honouring its long-serving president and passionate cinephile, Lakis Christidis.

BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice arrived in Hydra fresh from its world premiere as the opening film of the Venice Film Festival, where it received an enthusiastic reception.

ArtCinema screened Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel 36 years after the original supernatural comedy, with Michael Keaton returning as Beetlejuice alongside Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia and Delia Deetz.

The film follows three generations of the Deetz family returning to Winter River after an unexpected tragedy. When Lydia’s daughter Astrid discovers the model town in the attic and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, Beetlejuice inevitably finds his way back into their lives.

The returning cast was joined by Jenna Ortega as Astrid, alongside Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti and Willem Dafoe, bringing a new generation into Burton’s wonderfully strange universe.

THE WARHOL EFFECT

THE WARHOL EFFECT is a new documentary film delving into the late work, life, and enduring legacy of Andy Warhol. Despite his immense influence, little attention has been given to his 1970s and 80s output. From surviving an assassination attempt to his prolific return to painting, the film explores Warhol's evolution as an artist and his lasting impact on contemporary culture. Through interviews with his friends and modern artists, THE WARHOL EFFECT offers a fresh perspective on the enigmatic figure who continues to shape the art world today.

It builds into a fascinating new portrait of a man, of whom so much has been said - including original interviews with Urs Fisher, Damien Hirst, KAWS, Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, Tom Sachs, Julian Schnabel, Sarah Sze, Mickalene Thomas, Josué Thomas, Jordan Wolfson along with Bruno Bischofberger, Peter Brant, Bob Colacello, Jeffrey Deitch, Vincent Fremont, Larry Gagosian, Debbie Harry, Tama Janowitz, Kim Kardashian and Chris Stein.

SO LONG, MARIANNE

So Long, Marianne tells the legendary love story between Canadian singer and poet Leonard Cohen and an extraordinary Norwegian woman, Marianne Ihlen. It’s an intimate tale of two young people falling in love during a period of their life when they are trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world, while one is becoming one of the most famous singers of all time.

Their story crosses the world, travelling from the Greek Island of Hydra to New York, Montreal and Oslo, with the majority of the series set on picturesque Hydra, where they lived during the 1960s. There, they joined the now iconic Australian novelists Charmian Clift and her husband George Johnston, the matriarch and patriarch of a bohemian group of writers, artists, poets, and outcasts who were exploring a new world of free love, drugs, and artistic freedom, but also experiencing the rivalries and jealousy that accompanied their intense, interwoven lives.

Richard Tulk-Hart joined Buccaneer as co-CEO in 2020, following a career spanning international television distribution, production and co-productions.

Previously, he served as Managing Director of International Distribution, Formats and Co-Productions at A+E Networks, Head of International and Co-Productions at Miramax, Vice President of Sales for EMEA at Fremantle, and Vice President of Sales and Distribution at IMG Media.

His executive producer credits include Miss Scarlet and The Duke, Spy Wars, The Burning Girls, The Doll Factory, The Crow Girl, Irvine Welsh’s Crime, Whitstable Pearl and So Long, Marianne, as well as the podcast series Murder in House Two.

DRAMA INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

On Sunday the 6th of October 2024 ArtCinema screened a selection of three short films from the ‘Drama International Short Film Festival’ at Kamini Port in Hydra. This special screening was presented by DISFF Creative Director Yannis Sakaridis.

LIGHT OF LIGHT

Before his death in 1932, a monk created his own camera in one of the most isolated places in the world. Ninety years later, a filmmaker discovers and reconstructs the found footage.

Neritan Zinxhiria was born in 1989 in Albania. Director of Chamomile, The time of a young man about to kill, a country of two, having as a centre of inspiration the themes of loss and death, he continues to explore how they shape our memory and culture. His latest short film Light of Light, was nominated for a Tiger Award, having its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

AEROLIN

Sandy, a drama graduate with asthma, juggles yoga, clowning, an audition and a theatre performance, while trying to make time for her boyfriend, Spiros.

Alexis Koukis-Pantelis is a director, screenwriter and sound engineer working in cinema. His films have travelled to dozens of international festivals, garnering awards, such as Best Female and Male Lead at the 27th edition of Athens International Film Festival. Aerolin is his fourth short screening at Drama International Film Festival.

CROSSING

At a remote railway crossing surrounded by open hills, two guards live a quiet, repetitive routine marked only by passing trains, until love charges in, crushing all certainties.

Aineias Tsmatis was born in Elbasan Albania. He is a graduate for “ARCHI” School of Drama and of the Modern Music School of Athens. He works as a stage, film and TV actor. He writes and directs films.
Katerina Mavrogeorgi was born in Athens. She is a graduate of “ARCHI” School of Drama and of the Panteion University, Department of Communication, Media & Culture. She writes, acts and directs for the stage and the cinema. She has been awarded by the Niarchos Foundation’s ARTWORKS (2022).
