Greek percussionist Alekos Roupas opened Cinema & Souvlaki with an energetic 20-minute live performance, bringing rhythm, movement and a celebratory atmosphere to Kamini Port before the evening’s screenings.
Born in Ioannina, Alekos Roupas is a Greek percussionist whose practice spans traditional Greek, Mediterranean, Latin, Brazilian and West African music. He trained in traditional and modern percussion at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory and developed a distinctive style combining techniques from across these traditions.
As a performer and session musician, Alekos has toured internationally and collaborated with artists including Gloria Gaynor, Marios Fragoulis, Marinella, Antonis Remos, Glykeria and Melina Kana. His work has taken him from the Athens Concert Hall and Odeon of Herod Atticus to performances and workshops abroad.
Alongside his performance career, Alekos has taught traditional and contemporary percussion at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory since 2011 and has presented workshops internationally, including as a visiting artist at Berklee College of Music.
