NIGHTLY CINEMA SCREENINGS

Our surprise opening night film - like all six feature films in our program, apart from classics such as Boy on a Dolphin - will arrive fresh from the international film festival circuit and be followed by thought-provoking Q&As with the filmmakers. Screenings will unfold under the stars at Hydra’s beloved open-air Gardenia cinema, as well as at other treasured locations across the island.

We are deeply grateful to our industry friends and film patrons whose support helps us curate this world-class weekend of cinema. The full program will be revealed in the coming weeks, with one detail kept secret - our very special opening night selection.

MEET THE HELLENIC FILM & AUDIOVISUAL CENTRE

ArtCinema is delighted to welcome back the Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Centre and Creative Greece, the nation’s leading creative industry body overseeing Greece’s 40% film tax rebate. Last year, CEO Leonidas Christopoulos joined us and praised ArtCinema for its “passion for the new,” alongside founder Amanda Palmer. This year, they return with fresh insights from the world of film, coupled with an exciting new focus on fashion and music.

A POETIC AWARD WINNING FILM

For this exclusive private screening, the film follows an aging, erratic mentor who finds renewed purpose in guiding a talented young student. As he becomes more involved in her growth, he begins to question whether introducing her to his challenging and uncertain world is truly the right path.

  • Sorry, a surprise is a surprise…

ArtCinema will present a fully restored 4K screening of the 1957 classic Boy on a Dolphin in an open-air theatrical setting at the stunning Mandraki Bay - one of the film’s original shooting locations. This special, community-wide celebration will be an immersive seaside evening, evoking the glamorous 1950’s era with fashion, music, and dance, culminating in a sit-down taverna dinner at the beloved Lefterakis Taverna.

We are delighted to announce the world premiere of Hydra & Sophia: Echoes of a Dolphin - ArtCinema Hydra’s first original production. This 30-minute experimental short documentary, filmed entirely on Hydra and uses AI technology to enhance archive. By combining personal stories, archival material, and live performances from Hydra residents, it is a work shaped by the community itself.

BOY ON A DOLPHIN TRIBUTE

A CULTURALLY IMMERSIVE EVENING OF FILM, FASHION, DANCE & MUSIC

ArtCinema will present a fully restored 4K screening of the 1957 classic Boy on a Dolphin in an open-air theatrical setting on the stunning Mandraki Beach - one of the film’s original shooting locations.

This special, community-wide celebration will be an immersive seaside evening, evoking the glamorous 1950’s era with fashion, music, and dance, culminating in a sit-down taverna dinner at the beloved Lefterakis Taverna.

We invite everyone to learn the most iconic Greek song from Boy on a Dolphin so we can unite in music - “Ti Einai Afto Pou To Lene Agapi” (“What Is This Called Love”), with music composed by Takis Morakis.

American 1950's torch singer Julie London performed the English version for the film's closing credits, set to the Greek melody by Takis Morakis with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster and Gianis Ioannis Fermanoglou.

We are proud to host this event under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and the Italian Embassy in Athens, whose endorsement honours this unique cultural occasion.

FILM & FASHION CREATIVE ADVISORS

RICCARDO RUINI

Italian Creative Director and ArtCinema Advisor Riccardo Ruini joins this year’s event to celebrate the Italian connection. Known for iconic campaigns for Bulgari, Gucci, and Valentino, Ruini has collaborated with leading talents across photography, art, cinema, and music, and has directed the creative vision for Vogue Japan, GQ Style UK, and other top publications.

NICOLE ALEXANDROPOULOS

Greek-Italian director and producer Nicole Alexandropoulos — founder and artistic director of the Athens Fashion Film Festival — joins ArtCinema this year as a cultural ally, celebrating the Italian–Greek film and fashion connection through the Boy on a Dolphin and Italian icon, Sophia Loren.

MICHAEL CACOYANNIS FOUNDATION

We are also proud to partner with the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in honoring Hydra’s rich cinematic heritage. While the Hollywood production Boy on a Dolphin (1957) brought international attention to the island, Hydra’s cultural identity was also shaped by earlier works - most notably Girl in Black (1956), the only film Greek director Michael Cacoyannis ever shot on the island. As the first Greek filmmaker to achieve international renown, Cacoyannis played a pivotal role in bringing Greek cinema to the world stage.

To celebrate his legacy, ArtCinema Hydra will present two special screenings and events dedicated to Girl in Black and Electra, highlighting Cacoyannis’ groundbreaking artistry and his celebrated collaborations with composer Mikis Theodorakis - to whom the Ministry of Culture has dedicated 2025. Theodorakis, who also scored Electra and Zorba the Greek, as well as Phaedra (partially filmed on Hydra and starring Melina Mercouri), remains a towering figure in Greek cultural history. His international acclaim included the score for the Hollywood classic Serpico. Al Pacino, star of Serpico, paid tribute to the late composer, saying: “We will miss him, and we will remember him.”

CINEMA & SOUVLAKI

RETURNS TO KAMINI PORT

The much-loved Cinema & Souvlaki Closing Night returns in 2025, once again blending great cinema, local flavours, and the magic of film at the historic Kamini Port - considered one of the sacred waters of Hydra. This now-beloved screening venue has become a family favourite, with the iconic Kodylenia Taverna just steps away, offering some of the best sunset views on the island.

For 41 years, the Hydra Cinema Club - led by its long-serving president and passionate cinephile, Lakis Christidis, alongside his deputy, Dimitris Davis, and their dedicated volunteers - has run the beloved Gardenia Open-Air Cinema, one of Hydra’s most treasured cultural venues. We are deeply grateful for their continued friendship and support and look forward to collaborating year-round on educational programs, as well as welcoming more filmmakers and films to Hydra.
